Society of Saint Vincent de Paul

SVDP is involved in the following:

  • Furniture pickup and distribution or for yearly sale
  • Clothing pickup from any and all sources, ex. Fish in Piscataway, Our Lady of the Mount in Warren, local churches
  • Food pickup and distribution daily
  • Donations - St. Joseph parish, various local schools

Our monthly schedule is as follows:

  • Clothing give away every 3rd Saturday of the month
  • Food give away is on a daily basis as needed and during the clothing give away each month.
  • We serve sandwiches or a sitdown dinner
  • We also work with S.H.I.P. They have a mobile soup kitchen that serves in St. Joseph parking lot every Monday, 1st and 3rd Tuesday, and 2nd and 4th Fridays from 5:30 until 6:30. SHIP also provides clothing and medical screening.
  • Our meetings are the 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 7:00 in the Parish Center
  • We interview the needy on Tuesdays by appointment only and before meetings. We currently have 19 families waiting for financial assistance.

We collected food and donations to feed 100+ families for Christmas last year. We are planning to also include Thanksgiving this year.

We have 7 projects currently:

  1. Clean and organize rectory and parish center garages
  2. Clean and organize parish center basement and expand food storage area
  3. Expand Christmas food giveaway to include donations for children
  4. )Membership
  5. Establish a grant program to allow for yearly planning and budgeting
  6. Finalize SVDP handouts
  7. Distribute SVDP and SHIP handouts to parishes and needy.

Future projects

  1. Organize and support health care for anyone unable to afford health care
  2. Establish fund raising from yearly donations
  3. Establish and support 42 part-time employees
  4. Establish and support an ESL program
  5. Provide legal services to motivate Social Security and IRS usage
  6. Expand storage areas and office space

A typical month:

  • distribute bread from Shoprite and Panera every Sunday after 12:30 Mass
  • meetings on 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 7:00
  • interviews on 2nd and 4th Thursdays at 6:00
  • interviews on Tuesdays at 6:00 as requested
  • clothing giveaway on 3rd Saturday from 10:00 to 1:00
  • food giveaway on 3rd Saturday from 11:30 to 1:00
  • SHIP giveaway 2nd and 4th Fridays from 5:30 - 6:30
  • Total time 4:00 - 8:00
  • Hours and hours of sorting clothes, picking up furniture and packing bags of food
  • Deliver checks 2 saturdays per month
  • Provide transportation services as needed
  • Attend monthly SVDP district level meetings
